Event:  Updated Entry requirements for U.S. citizens who are traveling or transiting through airports in the United Kingdom – Effective January 8, 2025.

 

Beginning January 8, 2025, American citizens visiting the United Kingdom for short stays, tourism, or business, including those merely transiting through UK airports, will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) unless they possess a UK visa or have legal residency in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. This rule is applicable across all areas of the UK, encompassing Northern Ireland and British Overseas Territories. The ETA operates similarly to the U.S. ESTA system and serves as a pre-clearance for travel. This modification is a component of the UK’s transition towards a digital border system.

 

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA):

• May require up to three business days to process.
• Costs £10 ($12.75).
• Is mandatory for travelers of all ages.
• Is valid for two years or until the passport’s remaining validity period expires, whichever is shorter; and
• Does not necessitate travel specifics.
