As previously stated, still photography and filmmaking revolve around storytelling, and to excel as a photographer or film director, one must be an exceptional storyteller. Wim Wenders is a director I have respected and whose work I’ve monitored for numerous years. A number of his films, such as “Wings of Desire” and “Paris, Texas,” would undoubtedly feature on my list of all-time favorite films. As a photographer, it’s quite effortless to be captivated by Wenders’ visually impressive films as he consistently integrates the setting of the unfolding narrative as a crucial element of the stories he conveys.
Thus, it should be no shock to discover that Wenders was also a passionate still photographer who estimates having captured over 12,000 Polaroid shots during the decade he was nurturing his filmmaking skills—the interval preceding the remarkable growth of his film career in the mid-1980s. Regrettably, merely about a quarter of these Polaroids remain, but Wenders eventually organized them into a collection showcased in London a few years prior, and later compiled into a book. This book encapsulates an incredibly imaginative phase in his life when he was still discovering his path as a budding filmmaker.
