CARBONDALE, ILL. – More than a month following their previous meet, the Southern Illinois men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads are set to resume competition on Friday as they head to Indiana State. The women’s team from SIU will compete against Indiana State and UIndy, while the men will face UIndy and Ball State.

Last Time Out

The Salukis last participated in the Purdue Invitational held from November 21-23.

Day One: 

Senior Celia Pulido established a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.88. Subsequently, Pulido, Olivia Herron, Bea Padron, and Susanna Hernandez achieved a 1:37.21 time in the 200-yard medley relay, setting a new program record. This same quartet also broke another program and Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) record in the 400-yard medley relay while securing first place in the event.

In terms of remarkable finishes, Herron clinched gold in the 200-yard IM, while Alex Santiago came in first in the men’s 50-yard freestyle; Donat Csuvarszki finished just behind Santiago in the same event. Podium places were secured by Tiago Faleiros, Nicolas Lanuza, Aj Terry , and Willem Huggins in the men’s 400-yard medley.

Day Two: 

Another MVC and school record was broken when Herron completed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.17.

Santiago maintained his formidable weekend with a gold medal in the 100-yard butterfly, and Padron also achieved the same outcome in the women’s competition. Another first-place performance was showcased in the 200-yard freestyle by Hernandez, while Herron earned gold again in the 100-yard breaststroke. The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Santiago, Csuvarszki, Terry, and Huggins, took home first place. Pulido and Huggins both secured podium finishes in the 100-yard backstroke, achieving first and third places, respectively. Both 200-yard medley relay teams placed second, and in the 400-yard IM, Henrique Pacheco Januario finished as the runner-up.

Day Three:

On the third day, Herron shattered another school and conference record with her 2:09.13 in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning herself a first-place finish. Pulido, Padron, Hernandez, and Zaria Terry set a new MVC and school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Santiago established his own conference and school record with a time of 42.32 in the 100-yard freestyle, securing a first-place finish.

SIU had a gold medalist in the 200-yard backstroke courtesy of Pulido; also, Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez returned home with bronze in that event. Another top finish was recorded by the relay team of Terry, Csuvarszki, and Santiago.

Following the Purdue Invitational, Santiago received the title of MVC Men’s Swimmer of the Week for the third occasion. He achieved four first-place finishes in the “A” finals for the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Additionally, he met the NCAA “B” standards in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events; his 100-yard freestyle time of 42.32 set a new MVC and program record.
