MONTPELIER, Vt. — January marks the commencement of the ice fishing season in Vermont, and a prediction of frigid conditions over the upcoming week should provide growing chances to safely partake in this enjoyable and accessible winter pastime.

“Ice fishing is typically more attainable than fishing in open water,” stated Shawn Good, a fisheries biologist with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. “All you need is to walk out onto a frozen lake or pond with some basic equipment, drill a few holes in the ice, and relish being outdoors with friends and family while awaiting the fish to bite.”

As the weekend approaches, ice conditions are inconsistent across Vermont due to recent warm temperatures. Anglers should exercise sound judgment, understand how to read the ice and test it frequently, and consult a local outdoor shop or fellow anglers about regional conditions when selecting where to fish. It is crucial for anglers to always carry a spud bar to inspect the ice and some wearable ice picks for self-rescue, and to inform someone of their destination and their expected return time.

“A minimum of three to four inches of clear black ice is necessary for safe ice fishing,” noted Good. “For the cloudy gray ice we see after cycles of freezing, thawing, and re-freezing like we’ve experienced so far this winter, we suggest anglers find at least six inches of ice in the location they wish to fish.”

Some bodies of water at higher altitudes and in northern areas of Vermont already possess conditions suitable for fishing. Many lakes in the Champlain Valley and southern Vermont are not yet accessible. Furthermore, certain waters that had been fishable earlier this season will require several consecutive cold nights and days to re-solidify after last week’s mild temperatures.

Perhaps most crucial for both safety and enjoyment, Good advises always going ice fishing with a companion or a whole group of friends.

“For many, ice fishing is as much about spending time with friends and family as it is about catching fish,” remarked Good. “I’ve witnessed families on the ice with grills, food, and hot beverages having a fantastic time. They set their tip-ups, construct snowmen, and even skate and play pond hockey between periods of fishing.”

To discover more about ice fishing methods, safety, and locations to fish visit the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s “Ice Fishing Basics” and “Ice Fishing Opportunities” websites. For newcomers to the sport, the department’s “Let’s Go Fishing Workshops” provide chances to experience ice fishing with an experienced instructor and other novice anglers throughout the winter.
