Jim Meehan’s enthusiasm for photography commenced in the 1990s.
He acquired his first film camera to take part in a school photography competition, where the Pittsburgh local uncovered a fervor for documenting the environment around him.
Meehan initially focused on capturing landscapes and events, as his appreciation for travel, art, and nature expanded. One thing is clear: the self-educated photographer is drawn to vivid colors, pronounced contrasts, striking lighting, and abstract compositions.
A complimentary reception featuring Meehan’s artwork will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the Monroeville Public Library’s Gallery Space, located at 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd. Entitled “A Different Perspective,” the exhibition highlights how Meehan captures visuals and presents an alternative viewpoint on daily life.
Visitors will have the opportunity to buy original, framed pieces and matted prints. Meehan’s annual calendar, focused on Pittsburgh — which includes pieces from his exhibition — will be available for $30. Titled “Pittsburgh: A Different Perspective,” this calendar is printed on premium cardstock with a matte finish.
Although Meehan’s foundation lies in classic landscapes and urban scenes, his approach is anything but typical. He frequently searches for fresh vistas, utilizing drones for aerial imagery and infrared photography to portray landscapes in an entirely novel perspective. He also enjoys abstract photography and street captures.
“My favorite images are the ones where I can effectively depict what initially caught my attention,” Meehan stated. “The topic isn’t important as long as I can express the emotion I felt upon witnessing the scene or subject.” His photography has been showcased in NCAA sports, newspapers and magazines, galleries, and in marketing materials. He also offers private sessions including weddings, as well as pet and senior portraits.
Meehan was honored with the photography award at the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival in 2023 and received an award of merit at this year’s Fred Rogers Fine Arts Juried Exhibition. He is also a member of the Westmoreland Photographers Society and participates in exhibitions at the Latrobe Art Center.
Meehan integrates portrait and event photography into his work with nonprofit organizations – such as the Pittsburgh NFL Flag Football League in Penn Hills, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and several parks and nature preserves – to help narrate their significant stories through his lens.
“Some events need action shots, while others call for intimate portraits of an individual or a small group, like the costumes crafted by children in the Odyssey of the Mind competition,” he mentioned.
Meehan shares his life with his wife, Morgan, whom he met 19 years ago on the second day of their college experience at the University of Pittsburgh. The couple resides in the Plum area along with their dog, Ziggy.
“Morgan critiques most of my work and even selects a few images for me to submit to juried exhibitions,” Meehan expressed. “She possesses a great eye for detail.”
The exhibition will continue until Jan. 27. To learn more about Meehan’s photography, visit jmvisualarts.com or contact him via email at jimtakespix@gmail.com.
