Los Angeles County is currently facing the most severe wildfires in years, with numerous flames engulfing areas within California in the USA.

At least five individuals have perished and over 1000 residences have been destroyed.

The city is a significant destination for Australians and serves as a key hub for those traveling to other regions of the USA.

Here’s what you should be aware of if you have a vacation planned.

Where are the LA fires located?

Three uncontrolled fires are raging, namely the Palisades Fire, Hurst Fire, and Eaton Fire. They are wreaking havoc on homes as they spread across Los Angeles County and adjacent areas.

Aussies will likely be familiar with the tourist destination of Santa Monica being referenced. Known for its iconic pier, shops, and Baywatch beach, certain segments of the city have been evacuated due to the Palisades fire, which also extends between Santa Monica and the celebrity enclave, Malibu.

At present, the Santa Monica beach vicinity remains secure, as does the nearby tourist magnet, Venice Beach.

However, travelers should stay updated on alerts, as authorities have indicated that “the worst is yet to come.”

Are flights being cancelled?

LAX Airport is functioning normally.

However, verify with your airline if you are arriving or departing, as circumstances are rapidly evolving.

“Travelers should check their flight status with their airline directly,” LAX stated online.

What closures are in place in LA?

If you are flying into LA and then driving, numerous main routes are closed, and entire areas are under evacuation mandates.

The Pacific Coast Highway, which runs along the coast, is closed from McClure Tunnel in Santa Monica to Topanga Canyon.

Several local roads are closed as well, so verify before starting your journey.

Is travel to Los Angeles safe at this moment?

No advisories against travel are currently in place.

The Australian Consulate-General in Los Angeles stated on Facebook: “We are actively monitoring the wildfires throughout Southern California and encourage everyone to remain informed and prioritise safety.”

Since there is no formal warning against traveling, Australians wishing to cancel their plans will not be protected by travel insurance.

Is Universal Studios currently closed?

Universal Studios Hollywood and Citywalk in LA experienced closures due to the fires on Wednesday. No further information has been provided for the remainder of the week.

“We are continuously evaluating the circumstances and are guiding visitors to check our website for updates,” it stated.

Is Disneyland still operational?

Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure remain open.

Situated south of LA in Anaheim, it is quite distant from the fires.

However, be sure to monitor the park’s website if you’re intending to visit soon.

Which locations are shut in LA?

The Getty Villa mansion and gallery along with the Getty Centre are not accessible, as parts of the grounds have been scorched.

Griffith Park, the site of the renowned Griffith Observatory, is also unavailable.

Trails to the nearby Hollywood sign and the popular Runyon Canyon frequented by celebrities are inaccessible.
