The Unstoppable Iron Lady: Katinka Hosszu Dives into Retirement After a Legendary Swim Career

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Three-time Olympic victor Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, recognized as one of the finest versatile swimmers, has declared her retirement.

Regarded as the “Iron Lady” of swimming for her rigorous array of events, the 35-year-old Hosszu participated in five Olympic Games. She was merely 15 when she debuted at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Hosszu secured her three individual gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, excelling in the 100-meter backstroke, along with her notable 200 and 400 individual medleys. Additionally, she earned a silver medal in the 200 backstroke.

She also achieved nine individual world championships in the long course pool since 2009 and continues to hold the long course 200 individual medley world record. In the world short course championships, she garnered 17 gold medals.

“For three decades, the water has been my refuge, a haven where I discovered comfort and power,” she expressed in an Instagram post.

“From the instant I first entered the pool as a youngster, I realized I had encountered something extraordinary. The refreshing touch of the water felt like coming home, a realm where gravity vanished, and every stroke drew me nearer to my aspirations.

“Now, reflecting on my journey, I sense a profound sense of achievement. Medals and records are valuable, but what lingers most is my enduring passion for swimming.”
