An extraordinary astronomical occurrence is poised to transpire in Earth’s night skies, captivating both stargazers and astronomers alike. On February 28, all seven celestial bodies namely, Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars will align harmoniously in the heavens, an occurrence that scientists are labeling a rare planetary alignment. Although it is not unusual for several planets to coincide on the same side of the Sun simultaneously, an instance where all planets align is undoubtedly exceptional.

The previous occurrence of such planetary alignment took place in April of the previous year, coinciding with the total solar eclipse seen across North America. While the spectacular event is scheduled for next month, six out of the seven planets will be observable in the sky simultaneously in a prominent alignment beginning January 21.

Any grouping of planets, from three to eight, constitutes an alignment. A large alignment is when five or six planets appear together, with alignments involving five planets being considerably more common than those with six. However, alignments of seven planets are indeed the rarest of all.

In contrast to illustrations, the planets will not be seen in a straight row. They orbit the Sun in varying paths within three-dimensional space, making it nearly impossible for them to align in a linear formation.

“While it’s accurate that they [planets] will seem to form a line across the sky, that’s something that planets continually do. This line is termed the ecliptic, representing the plane of the solar system through which the planets revolve around the Sun,” NASA clarifies.

“This, incidentally, is why we sometimes perceive planets to be drawing nearer to one another in the sky, as we observe their movements along this line while they traverse the cosmic racetrack.”

Where is the best spot to observe the parade of planets?

To experience the parade of planets, it is advisable to move away from city lights to an expansive area or a hill. If conditions are favorable, you will be able to visually locate most planets unaided, except for Neptune and Uranus. A telescope might assist in observing these two celestial bodies.

While January held significance due to the Quadrantid meteor shower, February possesses the potential to be even more remarkable, thanks to this rare alignment.
