SCHOOL RECORDS BROKEN: Three athletes from the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team set new school benchmarks during the Tommie Invitational held from Nov. 21-23 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Senior Sam Johnson was the first to record a benchmark time, achieving a mark of 4 minutes, 29.95 seconds in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle on the opening day of the meet. This surpassed the previous record of 4:30.74 established last season by teammate Jack Ellison.
Two additional records were shattered the following day thanks to Braxton McGrath and Cody Vertin. A junior from Amana, Iowa, McGrath broke his own record in the 100-yard butterfly twice within the same day. In the Nov. 22 morning preliminaries, he achieved a then-record time of 48.51 seconds, reducing his previous standard by .07 seconds. In the evening finals, McGrath cut another .36 seconds from his earlier time, finishing first with a time of 48.15 seconds.
Vertin, a sophomore from Brookings, delivered his record-setting performance in the 400 individual medley during the morning prelims, clocking a top time of 3 minutes, 57.01 seconds. He slightly slowed down in the evening finals but still claimed the event in 3:57.40.

She secured third overall in both the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 52.69 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:09.64). She also ended up fifth overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.51 seconds.

In his first seven seasons, Humphrey has led the Jackrabbits to top-three team standings at the Summit League Championships five times in the men’s division and three times for the women’s team. Both squads achieved runner-up positions at the league competition during the pandemic-impacted 2020-21 season.
Before SDSU, Humphrey was the head women’s swimming and diving coach at Northern Iowa for five seasons. His Panther teams demonstrated consistent improvement in the Missouri Valley Conference, including achieving consecutive third-place finishes at the conference championship during his final two seasons in Cedar Falls.
Humphrey worked as the assistant swimming coach at the University of Nebraska from 2000-12 under Olympic gold medalist Pablo Morales. He competed for the Huskers from 1991-96 and later worked as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater.
