Garden City photographer Thomas Cupolo, in collaboration with the Col. Aaron Ogden Chapter of the NSDAR, Carla Hall D’Ambra, Regent, unveils an exhibition featuring large-format black and white photographs of Colonial and Revolutionary War-era structures and artifacts.
The exhibition will take place for the month of January at the lower-level Gallery of the Garden City Public Library. The historic buildings highlighted in the exhibit are found on Long Island, as well as in Tappan, New York. Featuring prominently is the residence of patriot Johannes DeWint from Tappan, NY. Constructed in 1700, this classic Dutch-style home served as the headquarters for Gen. George Washington. Also from Tappan is a photograph of patriot Casparus Mabie’s Tavern – built in 1668, it is now recognized as the Old ’76 House Restaurant. This local tavern served as the focal point for social gatherings during the Revolutionary War. Additionally, Mabie’s Tavern was utilized as the temporary jail for British Major John Andre before his trial and execution for his involvement in the conspiracy to seize West Point with Benedict Arnold.
Other significant historical sites featured in the exhibition include Hewlett House, Raynham Hall, and the Stony Brook Gristmill, all situated on Long Island. Did you know that during the seven-year occupation of Long Island, the British extracted grain and flour that was milled at this location to feed their soldiers? The photographs of artifacts feature a tea “brick”, teapot, powder horn, utensil tray, and architectural elements from that era. History enthusiasts and scholars will relish the opportunity to view these photographic gems while uncovering intriguing facts associated with them. The exhibit will be accessible for viewing at the library throughout January. Everyone is invited to a small reception in the Lower Library Gallery to commemorate the exhibit on January 25th from 1pm to 4pm.
