MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The winter storm is here. Check for the latest updates here.

Precipitation is expected to start arriving around 10 p.m. moving from west to east on Thursday evening. It will likely commence as a short-lived drizzle or sleet before swiftly transitioning to snow.

By shortly after 8 p.m., some viewers in Mississippi had already reported sleet. Most of the region is likely to be covered by midnight or prior to dawn on Friday, with sleet evolving into heavy, dense snow.

Snowfall will increase overnight and will remain substantial at times, particularly from 4 a.m. to noon on Friday. It will gradually diminish from west to east late Friday afternoon into the evening.

The vast majority of the WREG coverage area will receive at least 2-4 inches of snow. Nevertheless, a significant zone along the I-40 corridor may see 5-7+ inches. Refer to the graphic above for the most recent forecasted snow totals.

There remains an area of low certainty, particularly in parts of Coahoma, Quitman, Panola, and Lafayette counties, where a brief transition to rain and sleet might happen on Friday morning. This could reduce localized snow accumulations.

The snow will result in perilous travel conditions, so it is advisable to stay at home on Friday. Even on Saturday, minimal melting is anticipated as temperatures are barely expected to rise above freezing in the afternoon.

This will be heavy, moist snow which could lead to sporadic power interruptions.

Download the WREG Weather application and stay tuned for updates both on-air and online as this disruptive and inconvenient weather system moves into the Mid-South.
