A nonprofit organization that addresses electronic waste is highlighting the potential benefits of reuse and refurbishment

Now that the decorations are taken down, the new calendar hangs, and the tree’s on its way to be recycled. But what about the old devices we’ve upgraded this festive season?

The Restart Project, a nonprofit aiming to combat e-waste, is urging individuals to rethink where they dispose of their unnecessary gadgets, emphasizing eco-friendlier alternatives than recycling facilities. While our Christmas trees are converted into organic material that enriches the soil, the process is quite different for electronics, the team cautioned.

“Typically, devices are sent through massive shredders, which consume considerable energy and often do not retrieve many of the valuable metals and essential raw materials found in our gadgets – resources necessary for the green energy shift,” stated Fiona Dear, director of The Restart Project.

Recently, the charity released a report showing that 81% of waste facilities in the UK send their electrical and electronic waste to shredding. Reuse and refurbishment are significantly more economical, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible alternatives, noted Dear.

“We recognize that reuse is a considerably smarter utilization of our limited resources, hence benefitting the planet,” she elaborated. “It can also aid households in saving money by providing quality secondhand goods.”

The Restart Project intends to enhance our interaction with gadgets and ‘extend the lifecycle of electrical products to mitigate the increasing accumulation of e-waste’, hosting regular restart parties based in London and supporting networks of repair cafes worldwide.

Across the UK, numerous initiatives and companies offer options for donating old electronics. “Many waste management firms and local governments are very aware of these challenges,” stated Dear. “They aspire to see increased reuse and are looking for methods to prevent your devices from going to the shredder.”

In its Reuse and Repair Declaration, the charity advocates for the UK government to make repair more accessible through measures such as tax incentives and repair vouchers. Additional suggested actions involve fostering a new generation of repair professionals through training and certification and creating a repair index to aid consumers in selecting products that are more amenable to repair and more durable.
