ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – As the holiday season concludes and children head back to school, travel costs are decreasing, as stated by Zack Oakley, the executive director of the Chicago Rockford Airport.

“This is a quieter time of year. Essentially, as you come out of the Christmas season, airlines typically offer numerous promotions,” Oakley mentions.

According to Tammy Free, owner and travel consultant at Free to Dream Travel, this trend should be consistent throughout the year.

“In 2025, the prime times for travel will be whenever children are in school,” Free remarked.

Additionally, Free emphasizes that travelers can save significantly by reserving their tickets in advance, being adaptable with travel dates, and consulting with a travel advisor.

“Travel advisors can oversee bookings and may sometimes secure lower rates or match prices if a promotion is announced,” Free asserts.

Free highlights that those planning to travel this year should be aware of the new REAL ID requirement for domestic flights.

“To determine if you possess a REAL ID, look for a star on your identification. It resembles a driver’s license but features a star indicating that it is indeed a REAL ID. After May 7, 2025, you will not be able to fly with a standard driver’s license,” Free informed.

However, Oakley states that there are alternative methods to travel domestically.

“A valid passport will still allow you to travel, but the REAL ID has been a topic of discussion over the past couple of years, and although it has been postponed, it is finally being implemented,” Oakley explained.

For more details on applying for a REAL ID, visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website.
