Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has been a project long in the pipeline. Nearly seven years have passed since the launch of the initial game, which was pushed to market after a Kickstarter initiative that secured $1.3 million in a mere month. On February 4, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 will make its debut, and I’ve had the fortune of compiling a preview of the game.

I’m an enormous admirer of the first installment, which was rich in historical fidelity, featured challenging mechanics, and delivered a genuine narrative that left you feeling both engaged and tested in equal measure. All of that and beyond awaits you in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

Here’s my complete preview – it’s a deep dive into a cinematic marvel that’s taking shape.

If you prefer, you can view the full preview in video format:

Step into the World

I cannot emphasize enough how enveloping I already find Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. Equipped with a surround-sound headset, I’m wandering through summer woodlands and meadows, hearing the crunch of leaves and underbrush beneath my feet while birds chirp above in the foliage. Streams of sunlight penetrate the branches, illuminating a nearby stag, who detects my scent and bounds away through the trees.

Perhaps I’ll engage in hunting later.

In the next instant, I’m on a worn path beside a sparkling stream, which would be idyllic if it weren’t for the bandits blocking my way. They demand my Groschen; I simply implore them to let me pass, as I possess nothing.

They are indifferent, and in an instant, I find myself on the ground.

After a respawn, I’m in a nearby settlement, witnessing a brawl erupt between two merchants, for whatever reason. The locals gather to observe the commotion as I turn away and proceed down the path, deliberately avoiding eye contact since I’m unfamiliar with the inhabitants and they are inherently suspicious of me due to a recent tavern altercation.

That is how meticulous Warhorse Studios has crafted Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

From the reputation system to how the AI interacts with items you’ve discarded, and from manually forging a sword step-by-step to drying herbs and smoking meat for preservation, the intricacies and all the significant moments have been thoroughly contemplated by the studio in this remarkable game.

This is merely the onset.

The Return of Henry

Henry of Skalitz (Tom McKay) ranks among my favorite game characters ever. His journey in the first game was truly unforgettable, with his rags-to-riches narrative embodying the resilience of a survivor determined to change his misfortunes.

Henry makes a return in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, accompanied by Sir Hans Capon (Luke Dale), his loyal ally – a bold, self-assured counterpart with a confidence as vast as the wealth held in his family’s treasury.

Audentes fortuna iuvat, and everything that entails.

In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, our beleaguered duo quickly finds themselves in dire straits within moments of the game’s beginning sequences, left for dead after an altercation and a near-naked pursuit through the night. The game’s vividly cinematic introduction left me astonished – everything from the soundtrack to the sweeping camera movements over medieval landscapes captivated me right from the start.

Right away, McKay and Dale deliver outstanding performances, authentically embodying the rapport they’ve fostered both on- and off-screen over the years. There’s humor, there’s suspense, and for the initial three to four hours, there’s… well, the usual tutorial missions you’d anticipate from a game of this nature – but it’s all fantastic.

If you’ve never even heard of Kingdom Come Deliverance, you’ll step into the sequel uncertain of what lies ahead, but after a few hours acclimating to the ambitious open-world RPG, you’ll be eager to explore, evolve as a character, and dive into the winding, intricate storyline.

The Pinnacle of Evolution

The original Kingdom Come Deliverance was an extraordinary achievement – albeit at times a bit rough around the edges. It felt somewhat sluggish, possessed a fair share of glitches, and occasionally, it seemed overly difficult. It wasn’t a game that held your hand, but at times the difficulty felt a bit too demanding for the average player.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 retains that evident challenge in the opening segments, presenting players with a dire predicament that transforms them from a respected noble to little more than a peasant pleading for leftovers. Once adorned in splendid armor and wielding a sharp sword, you are now clad in rags with bruised knuckles.

That’s the reception you receive in KCD2 – but it’s magnificent.

For newcomers to the series, you’re starting from scratch, building Henry of Skalitz from the ground up and molding him into your desired form, and Warhorse Studios has done an exemplary job of articulating why such transformations occur. This is fundamentally an RPG, and from the skill trees to the manner in which you develop your character based on your chosen combat style, everything is shaped by you, the player.

player.

For my preview of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, I maneuvered through approximately the initial ten hours of gameplay. That timeframe was sufficient to observe that Warhorse has taken all the elements from the original game that I cherished and substantially enhanced them – a true evolution.

Visually, the game is breathtaking. The audio design is lavish and lifelike, the movement dynamics are significantly smoother and more gratifying than in the first installment, and the combat has been slightly toned down and refined. The game’s AI is credible, engaging, and logical, and the environment around you feels genuinely existent.

Of course, it is advantageous that it’s grounded in historical accuracy – Warhorse ensured they enlisted the most knowledgeable experts to guarantee that everything, from wielding a sword to the demeanor of local farmers, aligns with the game’s era.

In terms of performance, I am encountering no problems. I’m experiencing KCD2 on a premium gaming computer using a controller, and operating it at Ultra 1440p is raising no concerns about the game’s stability. It flows seamlessly and is (almost entirely) free of glitches.

Forge Your Story

During my conversation with Tom McKay, the voice behind Henry of Skalitz, he informed me about the richness of the choice and consequence system embedded in this game. As I navigated through the initial scenes for my Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 preview, I realized how significant even a casual remark in a discussion could be.

The world genuinely becomes what you make of it, and if you desire your Henry of Skalitz to be a deceitful, tactical criminal, then so be it. Conversely, if you prefer to be a steadfast and honorable member of the broader community within the open world of KCD2, that option is also available to you.

As you navigate the game and shape your character, you will encounter intense battles, remarkably cinematic cutscenes – all of which are fully acted out – and occasionally, a slower pace that transports you back in time by several centuries.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 begins as a gradual progression. You may not even see the title screen for quite some time, depending on your play style. It is crafted to provide all players with a thorough introduction, a backdrop of the story, and a guide for the game’s numerous mechanics. It’s pleasant – it feels organic and enjoyable, and the most effective way to understand is through experience, so I was more than willing to dive into it.

Not Long to Wait

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is scheduled for worldwide release on February 4, 2025. That’s merely a few weeks away – and until then, I plan to immerse myself in the game, exploring every corner in preparation for my complete review, which you can find here on Insider Gaming on February 3.
