Basha Freudenburg, hailing from Saxtons River, Vt., presents her latest oil artworks, created outdoors and inspired by the Vermont landscape. Freudenburg, whose parents are both artists, is an intense painter, evident in her vigorous style and abundant creativity. Dedicated to her plein-air technique, Freudenburg paints amidst the elements of New England throughout the year. In a piece like “Dummerston Landing,” she captures the landscape with what appear to be spontaneous brushstrokes, melding the pale blue of the sky reflecting on the river with the deep green and blue woodland edges, along with their darker reflections on the water. The sun, boldly positioned in the upper left corner of the artwork, creates repeated reflections in vibrant yellow and orange hues. The foreground features two tree trunks, along with the nearby edge of the river, depicted in dark red and bright green respectively.
Dorian Sanders, residing in Windsor, Vt., showcases a series of prints that encapsulate his achievements in astrophotography. From the northern lights to the Milky Way galaxy, the artist captures the beauty of the cosmos alongside breathtaking landscapes. Born in Massachusetts to two artistic parents, Sanders discovered his passion for photography while engaged in archaeological excavations in Europe and constructing timber-framed barns across the United States. He currently serves as a photography tour guide in various national parks nationwide, instructing both novice and seasoned photographers on capturing the night sky and landscapes.
Sandy Sherman, based in Bellows Falls, Vt., produces still life paintings that utilize light and color effects to depict delicate scenes of everyday items, vintage apparel, and distinctive antiques. In this exhibition, Sherman presents an oil painting featuring fresh peaches with their leaves and branches intact, as well as a collection of her “Grotoons.” These smaller works present characters with a whimsical essence that explore the grotesque tradition in Western art. A native of New Hampshire, Sherman has been engaged in traditional painting since 1980.
Kathleen Govotski, based in Rockingham, Vt., presents her latest acrylic artworks showcasing landscapes and floral still lifes. Govotski has intensely honed her painting skills in recent years. The artist employs drawing, painting, and undercoating techniques before applying swift brushstrokes to create representational pieces. In a work such as “Ready for Rain,” a warm orange and pink underpainting shines through the blues of the sky and the purple mountains behind. The foreground reveals more warm yellows intermingled with cool light blues and violets in a field where four black and white cows gaze attentively at the observer.
In the MC Noyes Vermont Trees solo exhibition, Michael Noyes, also from Bellows Falls, Vt., displays paintings utilizing Japanese color pigments on Chinese paper, illustrating the deep New England forests and their transformations in light and seasonal changes. This collection employs Xuan paper, characterized by its thinness and high absorbency, showcasing the quality of each brushstroke beautifully. Powdered pigments of various grain sizes and an extensive range of shades are blended with cow-hide glue to create paint, and are applied using brushes made of natural bristles that vary from soft to firm.
Clare Adams, situated in Cambridgeport, Vt., is dedicating her time within the Working Artist Program to block printing. Adams translates the abstract style visible in her monotype prints into her block prints of local towns, rivers, and vistas. The materials she uses consist of modern rubber mats where the inverted drawing is carved. She plans to enhance her wood carving skills and delve into traditional Japanese woodblock printing methods.
Amy Pandolfi, also from Bellows Falls, Vt., is a self-taught photographer and an experienced social worker, utilizing photography as a means of self-discovery. Pandolfi views photography as a healing instrument, a way to harness the positive psychological benefits of art and expression. Her current focus is on waterfalls as a subject. For her, the theme of flowing water, a potent healing force, symbolizes her personal journey of intuition, seeking insight in nature, and fostering her spiritual health.
Ashley Simmons, residing in Bellows Falls, Vt., is a mixed media creator who employs art as a means of healing and therapeutic expression. With classical training in figure drawing, Simmons integrates acrylic paint with collaged elements to add texture and vibrant colors to her canvases. “Art has consistently been my refuge. Currently, I am immersed in the joyous flow of creation, utilizing art as a mechanism to navigate through experiences and emotions, while also experimenting with diverse materials, textures, and subjects,” declares Simmons.
