A snapshot of surfer Gabriel Medina has clinched this year’s World Sports Photography Awards.
The yearly contest – evaluated by prominent figures from sports, media, photography, branding, and creative sectors – has named Tahiti-based French photographer Jerome Brouillet as this year’s victor, owing to a photograph he captured of the Brazilian during the third day of the surfing competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Teahupo’o, French Polynesia.
Over 13,000 images were entered by more than 2,200 professional sports photographers from 96 different nations for the contest, with only 24 photographs ultimately recognized across categories such as American Football, Baseball, Equestrian, Golf, Racquet Sports, and Football.
Sophie Collins, Chief Marketing Officer at MPB – a platform that facilitates the buying, selling, and trading of second-hand photography equipment – stated: “As a judge and sponsor of the ‘World Sports Photography Awards,’ I am continually inspired by the exceptional talent and creativity displayed in this year’s submissions.
“Sports photography possesses a singular ability to capture dynamic action and invoke deep emotion within a single image, narrating stories that surpass the confines of the playing arena. It has been exhilarating to witness the innovation and enthusiasm from this year’s contributors, establishing an outstanding benchmark for future competitions.”
The complete gallery of award-winning images, including the Top 10s in every sports category, can be viewed on the World Sports Photography Awards website.
