Minister Explores Telford: A Peek into the UK Defence’s Logistic Core

The Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, has made her inaugural visit to the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S)-owned Defence Fulfilment Centre (DFC) located in Telford.

Managed by Team Leidos, the £83 million state-of-the-art, comprehensive logistics center at MOD Donnington serves as a depot for the storage of the UK’s Defence inventory, ensuring the timely delivery of essential gear and provisions worldwide. This encompasses uniforms, pharmaceuticals, and various other critical items necessary for the front-line.

During her tour of the facility, which employs nearly 400 personnel, the Minister observed how the DFC aids the UK Armed Forces. It is one of two principal storage and distribution centers for the MOD, the other being at MOD Bicester, with a new site in Longtown, Cumbria, currently approaching completion.

The Minister also learned more about the Logistics Commodities Services Transformation (LCST) Programme, which plays a pivotal role in the DFC’s operations. Since its inception in 2015, the Programme has supplied goods worth over £1 billion to the UK military, delivering everything from food supplies to footwear, exactly where it is required, at the appropriate cost and timing.

John Farrow, DE&S Logistics, Services and Commodities Director, remarked: “We appreciated the chance to exhibit the logistical efforts involved in managing and distributing the UK’s Defence inventory from our MOD Donnington hub.

“In conjunction with Team Leidos, our Defence Fulfilment Centre has delivered military equipment valued at more than £1 billion to personnel on the front-line. Our team has been vital in providing assistance to Ukraine and various other global missions. We take pride in showcasing our contributions to the ongoing prosperity and safety of our nation and our allies.”

The Minister was demonstrated the Leidos Support Chain Integration Platform IT service operational at the DFC. This platform features top-tier technology that facilitates the delivery, inventory oversight, storage, transportation management, demand forecasting, and supply chain coordination of military equipment, thereby minimizing costs and enhancing distribution precision.

Simon Hutchings, Leidos Vice President Logistics and Mission Support and LCST Programme Manager, stated: “I am extremely proud of the accomplishments Leidos has made thus far in developing the Defence Fulfilment Centre in Telford and serving as the primary integrator for LCST. The adaptable capacity and strategic network robustness we’ve built have significantly strengthened defence resilience and improved our capability to support combatants with superior, more flexible adaptive logistics.”

On that same day, the Minister also toured the nearby Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land’s (RBSL) Hadley Castle Works Factory, where she engaged with defence personnel associated with DE&S-managed initiatives for the Challenger 3 and Boxer armored vehicles. This factory, together with its Stockport site, is at the forefront of producing the Challenger 3 tank, a crucial element of the British Army’s modernization endeavors.

Under an £800 million contract, the production of Challenger 3 has created nearly 300 skilled positions within RBSL, including 130 engineers and 70 technicians, along with an additional 450 roles supported throughout the UK supply chain.
