The Lake Fenton varsity girls basketball squad has entered a phase of restructuring this season.

Graduation has taken away most of the participants responsible for many winning seasons in the recent years, forcing the Blue Devils to discover new leaders.

The shift continued on Tuesday as the Blue Devils competed in their first game of the 2025 segment of the season.

Lake Fenton (0-7) registered its highest scoring performance of the season while playing away against Owosso, but narrowly missed out on a win, suffering a 41-31 defeat.

Previously, the Blue Devils’ best offensive output was 28 points on Dec. 6 at home versus Corunna. The Blue Devils have also faced a fairly challenging schedule. The cumulative record of Lake Fenton’s seven rivals thus far this

season stands at 32-17.

The Blue Devils kept pace with Owosso for most of the initial half. Mia Merrell contributed four points and Alicia Zelek along with Haile Falcon each scored in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Owosso’s Danica Dwyer was unstoppable, accounting for all 10 of Owosso’s points in the opening quarter. Lake Fenton trailed 10-8 as the second quarter began.

The Blue Devils’ offensive efforts stumbled in the second quarter. Braylee Ross connected on a three-pointer while Merrell added a two-point basket, but Owosso countered with 12 points, leading 22-13 at halftime.

After failing to score in the first half, Brooklynn Beardsley produced a significant third quarter, contributing eight of Lake Fenton’s 10 points in that period. However, Dwyer spent the entire quarter at the free-throw line, sinking 9-of-12 attempts, which fueled a 16-point quarter. Owosso led 38-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lake Fenton limited Owosso to just three points in the final quarter, while Audrey Hiler contributed two baskets, helping the Blue Devils to an eight-point period.

Beardsley and Merrell topped Lake Fenton’s score with eight points each, while Falcon added six points. Hiler scored four points.

Dwyer led all scorers with a remarkable 31 points. Owosso accumulated more than half of their total at the free-throw line, converting 21-of-34 attempts. Dwyer made 15-of-20 of those free throws. The Blue Devils committed 24 fouls, whereas Owosso was penalized only 11 times. Lake Fenton managed to hit only 6-of-10 at the free-throw line.
