KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) – It was an unusual Friday evening in downtown Kingsport, as numerous establishments opted to close due to the winter weather affecting much of the area.
Nonetheless, a few did not allow the snowfall to hinder their plans for a night out in the Model City.
“I believe the conditions are challenging for individuals in certain regions, but I think many may have overreacted,” said Brandon Calton, a resident from Southwest Virginia.
Calton noted that he primarily found unobstructed roads while traveling across state borders into Tennessee.
“Where we’re from, in the Duffield area and Big Stone Gap region – everything was shut down,” he stated. “So, we headed over to Kingsport – attempting to have an enjoyable evening.”
On East Market Street, Robert Brents closed his establishment, Breaking Tradition, early due to the snow.
“It wasn’t too severe at first,” he clarified. “But, as you can see, we’re sending everyone home now.”
He remained open long enough for some of his loyal patrons to enjoy an additional round or two on the pool tables.
“Just trying to have a good time on a Friday night,” remarked Ronald Smith, a resident of Baileyton.
Smith wasn’t overly concerned about the increasing snowfall. In fact, the Massachusetts native was beginning to feel quite at ease.
“We receive significantly more snow than this,” he mentioned. “However, we also possess the resources to manage it. Certainly, if individuals believe it’s safer to remain indoors, then clearly it’s safer to stay at home.”
Brents will likely adopt that mindset with his business on Saturday, especially if the roads continue to be hazardous.
“I’d prefer to prioritize safety over making a profit, you know what I mean,” he expressed. “The top priority is safety.”
