Stanford’s Surprising ACC Opener Setback: Cardinal’s Unforeseen Fall

PITTSBURGH – The No. 15 Stanford team commenced its ACC season with a 24-15 defeat against No. 18 Pittsburgh, on Friday at Fitzgerald Field House.

The Cardinal (4-2, 0-1 ACC) succeeded in only four of ten matches during their inaugural encounter with Pittsburgh (6-2, 1-0 ACC).

For the sixth consecutive dual, Stanford had to forfeit in the 125-pound category. Redshirt freshman Tyler Knox, who is ranked No. 10 at 133 pounds, mitigated the early deficit by achieving a commanding 17-1 technical fall over Matt Marlow in 4:23. Knox is now 15-2 overall and 6-0 in duals this season.

Fifth-year athlete Jason Miranda briefly put the Cardinal ahead with an 11-8 sudden-victory decision against Briar Priest at 141 pounds. This marked Miranda’s first dual participation of the season, and his record improves to 11-2.

Ranked No. 14, Hunter Garvin quickly established a lead with a 15-6 major decision victory over Jared Keslar at 165 pounds. This was the third time this redshirt sophomore has won by major decision, bringing his overall record to 10-6 and 3-2 in duals.

Redshirt freshman Lorenzo Norman, currently ranked No. 4 nationally at 174 pounds, concluded the scoring for the Cardinal with an 8-6 decision victory over No. 18 Luca Augustine. Norman’s overall record stands at 15-1, including five wins over ranked opponents, and he is 6-0 in duals.

Stanford will finish the weekend on Sunday at Noon PT against No. 21 Missouri, which will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
