BOSTON – Junior Quinn Hutson netted two goals and fellow junior Ryan Greene contributed four points, propelling the No. 15/13 Boston University men’s ice hockey squad to a 6-1 triumph against Vermont in the opening match of a weekend series on Friday night at Agganis Arena.

Greene initiated the scoring just past the seven-minute mark of the contest and added three assists. Sophomore Jack Harvey achieved a goal along with two assists for a career-best three-point evening, and senior Matt Copponi recorded two assists. Senior Jack Hughes and junior Devin Kaplan each scored a goal while sophomores Tom Willander and Shane Lachance joined freshmen Kamil Bednarik and Cole Hutson with one assist each.

Senior Mathieu Caron stopped the first 21 shots he faced while his teammates established a 6-0 advantage before UVM broke the shutout at 7:49 of the final period. Caron concluded with 27 saves for the Terriers, who enhanced their record to 10-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in Hockey East competition.

HOW IT UNFOLDED

  • Greene netted a goal from an unexpected angle just 7:05 into the match. With the puck behind the UVM net, he directed it toward the goal where it deflected off of Axel Mangbo’s pads and into the net.
  • Caron thwarted a breakaway opportunity shortly thereafter to maintain the Terriers’ lead.
  • Hutson’s initial goal of the evening came just 3:06 later immediately after a BU power play had expired. Greene caused a turnover through forechecking and passed it to Hutson, who patiently waited for a Catamount defender to dive past him before sending the puck into the net.
  • He then elevated the lead to 3-0 on a power play in the waning seconds of the period with a wrist shot from the right circle that found its way past Mangbo on the glove side.
  • Harvey increased the advantage to 4-0 just 25 seconds into the second period with a spectacular goal. Greene entered the UVM zone and dropped a no-look pass to Harvey in the left circle. Harvey, faced away from the goal, required just one touch to backhand the puck inside the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
  • Caron executed one of his finest saves of the night a few minutes later, denying UVM’s leading scorer, Colin Kessler, during a breakaway attempt.
  • Kaplan extended the lead to 5-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 15:32 of the second period. Bednarik won a faceoff in the offensive zone to Lachance, who quickly passed it back to Kaplan for a one-timer that zipped past Mangbo.
  • Hughes achieved his first goal of the year on a power-play opportunity just 1:21 into the final period. Cole Hutson delivered a marvelous diagonal pass to Hughes at the right post for the score.
  • Vermont scored its sole goal at the 7:49 mark of the last period.

GAME NOTES

  • This marked the Terriers’ eighth consecutive victory over Vermont, a streak that began on Jan. 22, 2022, at Agganis.
  • BU has averaged 5.13 goals per game during this span.
  • Quinn Hutson has netted five goals in the Terriers’ last two victories over the Catamounts, both ending 6-1.
  • He has tallied seven points (5g, 2a) during his current three-game point streak and now has 10 points across his last six outings.
  • This was Greene’s second game with three assists in his career; he also had three assists as part of a five-point performance at UMass on Nov. 11, 2022.
  • He has recorded six points (2g, 4a) over the last two battles.
  • Hughes became the 17th different Terrier to score a goal this season.
  • Sophomore Aiden Celebrini led the Terriers with four blocked shots.
  • BU went 2-for-5 on the power play and successfully killed all three penalties.

UP NEXT

  • BU and Vermont will wrap up this weekend’s series on Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
  • The puck is set to drop at 5 p.m.
