Women’s Basketball Struggles in Stony Brook Showdown

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—The William & Mary women’s basketball squad was unable to recover from Stony Brook’s spurts at the beginning and conclusion of the match, succumbing to the Seawolves 66-48 on Long Island.

Bella Nascimento topped the W&M (4-10, 1-2 CAA) with 14 points, marking her 11^th double-digit outing of the season. Cassidy Geddes joined her in scoring with 10 points.
 
Following Jana Sallman‘s layup, Stony Brook (7-7, 1-2 CAA) initiated their first run of the evening by netting the next nine points, establishing a 9-2 lead with 6:13 left in the first quarter.
 
Natalie Fox later added a layup to narrow the gap to 9-6, but the Seawolves answered with a 9-2 run, finishing the quarter with an 18-8 lead.
 
The teams exchanged scores to begin the second quarter, with Nascimento hitting back-to-back jump shots, narrowing it to 22-14 with 6:08 left in the half.
 
SBU responded with eight consecutive points before Nascimento interrupted the surge with her first of three three-pointers for the night; however, the hosts held a 32-18 advantage at halftime.
 
The Seawolves maintained their momentum into the third quarter, extending their lead to 42-23 just four minutes in. W&M attempted to mount a comeback, with Anahi-Lee Cauley scoring six points in the later portion of the third. Her last bucket made it 46-34, before SBU added a late basket to finish the quarter up by 13.
 
Early in the fourth, a Nascimento three-pointer along with a Kayla Rolph score cut it down to 54-43, but that was as close as they would approach, ultimately falling 66-48.
