HONOLULU – The Whitman College swimming squads continued their training excursion in Hawaii with a dual meet versus Division I University of Hawai’i, succumbing to the Rainbow Warriors in both the men’s and women’s events on Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The men’s squad was defeated by the ‘Bows 155-64 while the women’s squad lost 161-59.
“This evening’s competition against Hawai’i was truly enjoyable,” remarked coach Jenn Blomme. “It was the senior meet for UH, and there were some wonderful festivities to honor their seniors. We are currently in the midst of our most intense training period of the entire year, so expectations regarding speed were understandably quite low. Thankfully, in many instances, they were surpassed. However, we haven’t raced in over a month, so it was fantastic to refine the finer details and have some outstanding competitors to pursue.”
Blomme added about the outdoor meet, “the announcer informed the audience that rain is often regarded as a blessing in Hawai’i and following a warm start to the meet and the final 25 of the men’s last relay, the heavens opened to a brief yet delightful rain shower. What a wonderful conclusion for their (UH) seniors during their final home competition.”
While UH decisively claimed victory in both events, John Leeds secured fourth place in the 200 free (1:44.75), nearly three seconds ahead of Hawai’i’s Makena Ginoza.
The Blues will return to Northwest Conference action next weekend, hosting Pacific and George Fox.
