Maly and Mogensen Ignite Women’s Basketball to Defeat Seton Hall 72-64

South Orange, N.J. — Seniors Morgan Maly and Molly Mogensen collaborated to deliver 41 points, propelling Creighton women’s basketball to a 72-64 away victory over Seton Hall on Saturday, January 11.

The triumph brought the Bluejays to 14-3 for the season and 6-0 in BIG EAST competition, while Seton Hall dropped to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

In the first quarter, both teams capitalized on brief spurts to gain the lead as Seton Hall advanced to 7-4 with five consecutive points, only to see the Bluejays respond with a score from Maly and a three-pointer from senior Jayme Horan to regain the lead at 9-7 (4:24). The teams exchanged scores throughout the first period, with the Bluejays holding a 17-15 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Seton Hall promptly equalized on their first possession in the second quarter at 17-17, but that marked the last tie of the match. Creighton established a slight lead with a 7-0 run, initiated by a three-pointer from Maly and followed by baskets from junior Kennedy Townsend and Mogensen, building a 24-17 (7:26). With a 31-27 edge and 3:11 to go, the Bluejays concluded the half with a flurry of eight consecutive points, as senior Lauren Jensen hit from beyond the arc and converted two free throws, followed by Maly sinking another three-pointer, giving the Bluejays a 39-27 advantage at halftime.

Creighton expanded its lead to 17 points at 44-27 early in the second half, but the Pirates outgained the Bluejays 22-11 over the concluding nine minutes of the period, closing the gap to 55-49 going into the fourth.

Although the Bluejays extended their lead back into double digits twice in the initial minutes of the final quarter, the Pirates would not back down. With Creighton leading 62-52 (7:41), Seton Hall put together seven straight points in under a minute to make it a single possession game. Mogensen steadied the Bluejays with a driving layup with 6:03 remaining. The defense tightened for both teams for the next three minutes, but a free throw and basket by the Pirates made it a 64-62 game with 2:29 on the clock.

In the decisive moments, Maly took charge, nailing back-to-back three-pointers, one from the left corner and another from near NBA range at the right elbow extended to secure the victory.

Maly led all players with 23 points, while Mogensen wrapped up the game with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Seton Hall received 18 points from Faith Masonius, 11 from Jada Eads, and 10 from I’yanna Lops in the defeat.

Creighton will be back in action on Saturday, January 18, as the Bluejays take on DePaul at D.J. Sokol Arena at 2:00 p.m.
