Triumph in the Deep: A Showdown with Boston University and Colgate in Swimming & Diving!

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The swimming and diving teams at Fairfield University achieved a split in today’s tri-meet, triumphing over Colgate University while losing to Boston University.

The Stags men’s squad outperformed the Raiders with a score of 223.0 to 70.0 while the women’s team secured a win with a tally of 186.0 to 114.0. In the competition against the Terriers, the Fairfield men’s team fell short with a score of 169.0 to 130.0, and the women’s team also lost by a margin of 160.0 to 139.0.

Andrew Cataldo captured two of the team’s 13 first-place finishes, dominating both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. The sophomore achieved a NCAA zone cut with his performance on the 1-meter board, amassing 304.70 points—the only score to exceed 300 points in the event. He completed the sweep with a score of 276.10 points in the 3-meter dive, winning the event by nearly 20 points. Joseph Stewart and Ed Hunt also claimed two top finishes, with Stewart winning the 200 free (1:42.18) and the 100 free (46.39), while Hunt secured victories in the 200 fly (1:53.16) and the 200 IM (1:54.61).

On the women’s side, Tone Sandsjoe and Erin Hoyland each secured two victories in their respective events, with Sandsjoe excelling in the breaststroke and Hoyland achieving success in the freestyle. Hoyland finished first in the 1000 with a time of 10:33.54 and also took the 500 free with a time of 5:08.16. Sandsjoe recorded the fastest time in the 100 by finishing in 1:04.62 and the 200 with a time of 2:25.36.

The Stags commenced the event with the best time in the women’s 200 medley relay (1:45.81), thanks to the efforts of Erini Pappas, Tone Sandsjoe, Lara Kisakol, and Olivia Thompson. Pappas would later return to achieve her own individual first-place finish, winning the 100 back with a time of 58.43. Thompson also secured a first-place swim by taking the 50 free in 24.63.

Fairfield is set to embark on three consecutive weekends filled with dual meets. The Stags will journey to face MAAC rival Iona College on January 18 before hosting UMass on January 25 at the RecPlex Pool. The diving events against UMass will initiate at 11 am, followed by swimming commencing at roughly 1 pm.
