Discussion Highlights the Influence of Photography During the Civil Rights Era

Fort Scott, KS – The Gordon Parks Museum in Fort Scott, KS is set to host “The Power of Imagery and Civil Rights Experience,” a presentation and discussion led by Ann Dean on Monday, Jan 20, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at the Danny & Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. Community members are encouraged to participate in this complimentary program. For further details, please reach out to the Gordon Parks Museum at 620-223-2700 ext. 5850. This initiative is made possible through Humanities Kansas.

This event is a free Lunch and Learn session, with lunch catered by Dunk’s BBQ, along with drinks and desserts provided by Great West Dining. Everyone is invited and encouraged to partake in this celebratory event,” stated Museum Director, Kirk Sharp.

From its beginnings, photography has served as a powerful tool for highlighting social issues, stirring emotions, and reshaping perceptions of our surroundings. This presentation will explore the significance of photography within the civil rights movement, following the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, and tracking the portrayal of Black individuals and communities from historical contexts through the Brown v. Board era to the contemporary period.

Ann Dean, an artist and freelance photographer, conducts photography courses at the Lawrence Art Center.

“The Power of Imagery and Civil Rights Experience” forms part of Humanities Kansas’s Speakers Bureau, which features presentations based on humanities to share inspiring narratives, ignite informative discussions, and foster insights that enhance civic participation.
