STATESVILLE, N.C. – While a significant portion of the Charlotte region experienced melting ice and snow throughout the day, areas to the north remain blanketed in snow and slush.

In Statesville, families took full advantage of the snowy weather, even as rising temperatures began to reduce the accumulation.

One such family, the Longs, spent their day sledding and constructing snowmen.

“We are just having fun outside, soaking up the sunshine, and playing in the snow,” remarked Jeni Long, a mother relishing the unusual weather occurrence with her kids. “This is the first time in about three years we’ve had snow, and the children have eagerly awaited it every winter.”

Her children were overjoyed, expressing their excitement for snow, with one gleefully adding, “We can eat it!” Meanwhile, their father, Jonathan Long, humorously noted that the time spent outside had an extra advantage: “It’s going well – allowing the kids to burn off some energy so they’ll be ready to settle down later.”

While families reveled in the snow, road conditions created difficulties for motorists, particularly as the wet slush presented an ice risk as temperatures fell.

Paramedic Lester Oliva from Mecklenburg EMS cautioned against the hazards of icy roadways.

“We’ve noticed a rise in minor traffic collisions,” he stated. “People feel reassured driving on a small amount of ice or snow as if it’s a regular day. They veer off roads, slide into ditches, or strike trees.”

As temperatures continue to decrease, Oliva recommended staying off the roads whenever feasible. “It’s crucial to avoid the roads, especially during this time,” he advised.
