Athenas Make Waves: Dominating Double Dual Against Cal Lutheran and La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Sun Young Byun triumphed in three individual events (200 free, 100 fly, 400 IM) and played a role in a medley relay victory as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team achieved a 209-90 triumph over Cal Lutheran, along with a 248-28 victory against La Verne in a double dual meet on Saturday at Axelrood Pool. 

Kelly Prawira completed a breaststroke sweep for the Athenas, who also claimed victory in both backstroke events, all distance competitions, each diving event, and both relays, enhancing their record to 7-2 overall this season, including 6-1 in SCIAC contests. 

Izzy Doud commenced the day with a victory in the three-meter dive for the Athenas, scoring 296.35 points. She later finished a narrow second in the one-meter dive, just behind teammate Meilan Uyeno, who surpassed 300 with a score of 303.40, finishing 7.35 points ahead of Doud. 

The initial swimming event saw CMS achieve a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay, with Annika Sharma, Mackenzie Mayfield, Byun, and Madeleine Kan winning in 1:48.62. The CMS B team, consisting of Samantha Ennis, Milan Manfredi, Praise Okodogbe, and Annette Chang secured second place with a time of 1:51.05. 

Katy Shaw emerged victorious in the meet’s first individual race, narrowly defeating teammate Avalon Sanders in the 1000 free, finishing just .62 in front (10:41.12 to 10:41.74). Allison Nguyen completed a distance sweep later in the event with an impressive time of 5:08.85, winning by nearly 10 seconds over Kendall Moffitt of Cal Lutheran. 

Byun then claimed her initial individual victory in the 200 free, finishing in 1:55.63, crossing the finish line over three seconds ahead of Sharma. She followed with a victory in the 100 fly at 56.96, where Mayfield came in second (57.55) and Kan in third, concluding her flawless 3-for-3 performance in individual events with a time of 4:39.86 in the 400 IM, as Revere Schmidt secured second and Nika Makhervaks took third. 

Prawira achieved her first victory in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:07.53, with Mayfield finishing second. She further added a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.11, as Manfredi placed second and Schmidt third. 

Ennis clinched the 100 back in 1:01.27, leading another 1-2-3 finish for CMS, with Kan in second at 1:02.05 and Chang in third at 1:02.36. Werts completed a backstroke sweep in the 200 with a time of 2:10.46, edging out Ennis by 1.5 seconds. 

CMS concluded the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Nguyen, Mayfield, Kan, and Chang finishing first in 1:37.91, winning by a little over three seconds. 

The Athenas will be back in action in two weeks as they head to Redlands for the final SCIAC regular-season meet of the season. CMS will return home on Feb. 8 for the CMS Invitational, the last preparation before the SCIAC Championships.
