A Palestinian official acquainted with the discussions stated to the BBC that the terms of an agreement regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are being finalised.

This comes as White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan mentioned that an agreement concerning a truce and hostages might be reached “this week”.

An Israeli representative further informed the news agency Reuters that the negotiations were now in “advanced stages”, with a possible deal in “hours, days, or longer”.

US President Joe Biden held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, followed by talks with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar – the mediator of the negotiations – on Monday.

Sullivan also indicated that Biden was scheduled to speak with President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt.

These recent developments arise as Netanyahu encounters significant internal opposition to a potential deal from members of his governing coalition. A group of ten right-wing members, including some from Netanyahu’s Likud party, have sent him a letter expressing their disapproval of a truce.

The Palestinian official informed the BBC that indirect discussions between Hamas and Israeli representatives occurred within the same building on Monday.

Detailing some possible aspects of the agreement, the official mentioned that “the detailed technical talks took a significant amount of time”.

Both parties have consented that Hamas will release three hostages on the initial day of the agreement, after which Israel would commence withdrawing its troops from populated regions.

Seven days subsequent, Hamas would free four more hostages, and Israel would permit displaced individuals in the south to head back north, but only on foot along the coastal route. Vehicles, animal-drawn carts, and trucks would be allowed to pass through a corridor adjacent to Salah al-Din Road, supervised by an X-ray machine run by a Qatari-Egyptian technical security team.

The agreement also stipulates that Israeli forces will remain in the Philadelphi corridor and uphold an 800-meter buffer zone along the eastern and northern borders during the initial phase lasting 42 days.

Additionally, Israel has consented to release 1,000 Palestinian detainees, including about 190 who have been serving sentences of 15 years or more. In return, Hamas will liberate 34 hostages.

Discussions for the second and third phases of the agreement will initiate on the 16th day of the ceasefire.

In the meantime, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that a surge of Israeli air strikes on Gaza City on Monday resulted in the deaths of over 50 individuals.

“They attacked schools, residences, and even gatherings of people,” stated civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal to AFP.

The Israeli military announced that it is investigating these claims. Meanwhile, they reported that five soldiers were killed on Monday in the northern Gaza Strip.

The conflict began with Hamas’s assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 251 individuals taken captive to Gaza.

In retaliation, Israel initiated a military offensive in Gaza aimed at dismantling Hamas.

According to Gaza’s Hamas-administered health ministry, over 46,500 individuals have perished in the conflict.

Israel states that 94 of the hostages remain in Gaza, of which 34 are believed to be deceased, in addition to another four Israelis who were abducted prior to the conflict, with two of them confirmed dead.
