Michigan State Head Coach Robyn Fralick
Opening Statement…
Absolutely, it was a fantastic victory for our squad tonight. I was aware that Washington is a formidable team. They’ve been showcasing their best gameplay recently, so we understood that it was going to demand significant focus, precision, and execution from us, and I believed our team excelled in all those aspects. It was a memorable evening, being Alumni Day, with numerous alumni returning from various eras, but it was particularly special since we also had the opportunity to honor the 2005 National Runner-Up team. It was their 20-year reunion, and being a part of that occasion was genuinely remarkable. I constantly remind our team that being part of a program means acknowledging the many outstanding players and coaches who came before and those who will come after, and in the interim, we bear a responsibility to that legacy. It was wonderful to hear their stories and memories and to witness their dedication to being a Spartan. Today, I felt we played exceptional team basketball, and the Alumni Day added an extra layer of significance to it.
On bouncing back after the Nebraska game…
We needed to implement some changes in our full-court pressure strategy. We must be tactical about it to avoid conceding high-percentage shots. A significant takeaway from the Nebraska game was that we needed to pass the ball more effectively. Our passing and spacing were lacking after that game, making it easier for the opposition to defend. We made substantial improvements in that area tonight. With 21 assists, we demonstrated much better efficiency and spacing, which made me proud. Coming off a performance like that, one of the key lessons throughout a season—especially in the Big Ten, which offers valuable teachings every game—is that adjustments are crucial. We don’t have abundant time for changes, so we must enact adjustments promptly in practice and watch film, and then go out and execute and distribute the ball significantly better. I thought that was immensely beneficial for us.
On minimizing turnovers post-Nebraska…
They were congesting the paint, making it easy for them to help defensively when we weren’t moving the ball. However, once we began sharing the ball more effectively, it became challenging for them to stay in help positions as the ball moved. I believed we made a good early adjustment there. Initially, we were attempting too much with just one or two passes, but as the game progressed, our ball movement improved, allowing us to stretch their defense.
On different players stepping up in each quarter…
For our team to thrive, collaborative team play is paramount. We don’t depend on a single player to bear all the responsibility; we work together, getting stops as a unit, and creating quality shot opportunities as a whole. Nevertheless, there were various moments in each quarter where this was particularly advantageous. I thought Grace stepped up in the first quarter, as we started sluggishly, and she immediately got us energized. Theryn played a crucial role in extending our lead late in the game, right? Julia also had a notable stretch, and I believe Jocelyn Tate significantly influenced our defense with her on-ball pressure. When we play well, there are multiple individuals at different points in the game who contribute to our success.
On the inspiration of competing on Alumni Night with the 2005 team present?
It’s always a privilege to compete in Breslin. We revel in playing at home, cherishing our fans and the vibrant atmosphere. However, having the greatest team in our program’s history makes it particularly meaningful. It was enjoyable to discuss this with our players—what it signifies, how it manifests, what it feels like to be a Spartan, and revisiting a place you cherish, where you can return with your children. It’s gratifying to showcase it, and when we truly love and care for it, it’s rewarding to partake in that experience.
How vital was it to gain a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter?
It was significant. Their squad is exceptionally efficient, featuring numerous players capable of hitting three-pointers or creating easy scoring opportunities. It never feels out of reach due to their capacity to score efficiently. I thought that lead was beneficial for our chances. We also managed to string together defensive stops. Washington has been strong on the offensive boards, but I believed we did well in limiting them to one shot on most possessions.
