Equipped with a sizable film camera and frequently donned in sports attire, photographer Kim Seunggu, based in Seoul, has dedicated nearly 15 years to encapsulating the spirit of what he refers to as “leisure culture” — holidays, relaxation beside pools, and social gatherings — in modern South Korea.
The subject of his ongoing collection, “Better Days,” becomes even more significant in a nation that ranks fourth worldwide in longest working hours, where the situation termed “gwarosa” (death due to overwork) is believed to be responsible for numerous fatalities each year. In 2023, the South Korean administration was compelled to withdraw proposals to raise the maximum working week from 52 to 69 hours in the wake of pushback from Millennial and Gen Z employees. This suggested move aimed to address the country’s labor shortfall resulting from a declining birth rate and an aging demographic.
As per Kim, South Korea’s leisure culture is characterized by a desire for escape from the nation’s immense work pressures and rapid lifestyles.
Kim, 45, began documenting these moments in 2010, during his graduate studies. His endeavor has taken him to the celebrated Jangheung Hanok Swimming Pool, where its mineral waters lie against the scenery of a traditional Korean residence; Royal Azaleas Hill, famous for its blooming azaleas; Mulbit Park, showcasing peaceful nature trails; and numerous camping sites within city parks nationwide.
In his youth, Kim witnessed the lively interactions of individuals enjoying their leisure time. As he matured, he felt an urge to document these experiences. “I developed a fresh fascination for these scenes,” he shared with CNN during a phone conversation.
The photographer’s collection has received notable acclaim, awarding him the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Photography Competition and a shortlist nomination for the BBA Photography Prize. Kim’s art has also been presented in esteemed exhibitions at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and the Seoul Museum of Art.
His forthcoming book “Better Days” contains nearly 50 images from the series and explores deeper concepts of community, recreation, and balance between work and personal life.
Similar to how 20th-century photographers unknowingly documented the ephemeral moments of their era — Kim, who admires American color photographers such as Richard Misrach and Joel Sternfeld — has emerged as a documentarian of contemporary Korean life, unveiling the subtle intricacies of joy and complexity that characterize it.

“While many might perceive the lengthy work hours and brief holidays in Korea negatively, I interpret them as a testament to individuals adjusting and triumphing over difficulties, highlighting their hard work,” he remarked. “We somewhat embrace these paradoxes, and therein lies a quest for enjoyment during downtime. This positivity is palpable in Korean leisure culture, which I sought to convey through warm, vibrant imagery.”
He also emphasized the significance of his artistic approach and dedication to “slow photography,” which requires patience, as he frequently dedicates extended periods observing before snapping a single photograph.
Ironically, his portrayal of Korea’s transforming leisure landscape embodies a considerable work ethic.
“I intend to persist until I am unable to do so,” he stated.
