Recently, Cranfield University joyfully welcomed back NASA astronaut and
notable alumnus, Commander Jack Hathaway, for a memorable visit
to a local educational institution. Having studied at Cranfield in 2014,
Commander Hathaway engaged with Year 5 students during an
assembly at Holywell School in Cranfield.

Commander Hathaway recounted his motivational journey

from serving as a Commander in the U.S. Navy to training as a NASA
astronaut. He elaborated on his preparation for upcoming missions to
the International Space Station and the Moon, providing the children with a
distinct perspective on the challenges and benefits of space exploration.

Throughout the assembly, the students eagerly questioned
Commander Hathaway about his career, aspirations for space travel, and what
is required to become an astronaut. He also evaluated a space-related contest
the students had undertaken in class, offering insightful feedback and
encouragement to them.

Commander Jack Hathaway remarked: “It was such a delightful visit; the kids were
intelligent and expressive, and they were thrilled to learn about my journey; in turn, I was excited to hear their questions and stories. They are certainly a group of children with remarkable aspirations for their futures.”

“We were excited to have Commander Jack Hathaway return to
Cranfield and engage with the local community,” commented Professor Mark Westwood, Professor of
Aeronautics and Head of the Centre for Aeronautics at Cranfield University. “His
story is immensely motivating, and it was fantastic to witness the children so
invested and enthusiastic about space and STEM opportunities.”

The visit left a significant impact on the students, igniting
interest and enthusiasm for space. It also enhanced the robust relationship
between Cranfield University, its alumni, and the surrounding community.

Neil Colbourne, Head of Science at Holywell, expressed: “Our Year 5 pupils had
been studying space and were eager to learn about Commander
Hathaway’s path to becoming an actual astronaut. Clad in his NASA
uniform, he was truly inspiring! His message to ‘Dream big’ resonated perfectly. As
the students departed the assembly, making their way back to class, there was
a gleam in their eyes, a bounce in their stride, and an aspiration to strive
for the stars. Mission accomplished!”

Commander Jack Hathaway is a NASA astronaut and a former Commander in the
U.S. Navy. Chosen by NASA in 2021, he has undergone extensive astronaut
training and is prepared for future missions to the International Space
Station and the Moon. He is a proud graduate of Cranfield University, where
he studied in 2014 before launching into his extraordinary career in space
exploration.
