For years, I’ve been anticipating an Alienware gaming handheld, and Dell has finally shed light on why it isn’t available yet. Before you become overly enthusiastic, the PC manufacturer is not on the verge of unveiling a competitor to the Steam Deck; however, it claims it’s a “space we are examining quite thoroughly.”
During a recent CES 2025 press conference, Indian Express (paywalled article) explores remarks made by General Manager Matt McGowan regarding Alienware gaming handhelds. Instead of diving headfirst into portable PCs, the Dell GM initially admitted that the Switch holds a “clear edge” in the market. He commended the console for its lightweight construction and for delivering a “smooth experience” regarding games and software – two key reasons why it remains my top choice for a gaming handheld even in 2025.
Regarding McGowan’s perception of handhelds like the Steam Deck OLED, he thinks portable PCs do not “fully address all those elements.” He also delivers a somewhat backhanded remark by indicating they “do a decent job,” then asserts he isn’t satisfied with that standard.
Ultimately, the Dell GM dismisses any ideas of an Alienware handheld utilizing the current format. He acknowledges that “consumers are inclined to accept those shortcomings” in devices like the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, but affirms that it’s “not a step we are ready to take at this time.” McGowan concludes with a bit of humor, suggesting the company doesn’t want to imply “Hey, consumer, this is satisfactory, right?” while offering a portable PC that competes with existing alternatives.
Might Dell introduce an Alienware handheld gaming PC?
Dell has not outright rejected the concept of an Alienware gaming handheld, but the company does seem reluctant to venture into that realm. It’s evident to me that the PC brand has pondered the format extensively, and all indications are that it does not wish to play second fiddle to the Switch and Steam Deck.
This doesn’t imply we won’t eventually see an Alienware handheld gaming PC. It simply means Dell aims to provide a well-rounded device devoid of significant drawbacks. While I appreciate devices such as the Steam Deck, the sacrifices like battery lifespan lend the hardware category an experimental feel.
Do I believe it’s feasible to create a portable PC without drawbacks? The brief answer is no, and I don’t believe aspiring for such lofty goals is advantageous. Instead of utilizing the idea that the Switch performance “meets standards for the Nintendo ecosystem,” as a justification not to contend with the Steam Deck, I would prefer to see Alienware innovate in the handheld sector by delivering an enhanced experience to the growing gaming audience.
Why can’t Dell be the company to create a better equilibrium between runtime and portable PC performance? Perhaps it believes that the current APU and battery technology are not quite sufficient yet. I’ll be reflecting on that very question as I experience new AMD Ryzen Z2 devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S, particularly since the launch signifies a new era of handheld gaming PCs.
