Box Score | Season Stats | Photo Gallery | Quotes COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/9 Ohio State women’s basketball squad (16-0, 5-0 B1G) prevailed against Oregon (12-5, 3-3 B1G) on Sunday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center during the teams’ inaugural encounter as Big Ten rivals and their first meeting ever in Columbus.
Both squads began the game sluggishly with Oregon holding an 11-8 lead after the first 10 minutes. Ohio State launched a 27-0 surge in the middle of the second quarter and outscored Oregon 31-11 during that period, taking a 39-22 advantage into halftime. The scoring was balanced in the third quarter, with both teams netting 21 points, leaving the Buckeyes ahead 60-43 after 30 minutes. Ohio State resisted a Ducks’ rally in the fourth quarter to secure a 69-60 victory.
Taylor Thierry became the first player to reach double digits, finishing with a season-best 20 points, matching her career-high of three three-pointers.
Jaloni Cambridge (13) and
Ajae Petty (13) also contributed to the scoring in double figures. Moreover, Thierry achieved her 600
th career rebound today. Petty recorded a season-high 14 rebounds, marking her fourth double-double of the season.
How it Occurred Both offenses struggled to start as
Ajae Petty was the first to put points on the board with 7:37 left in the quarter. Oregon followed with nine consecutive points to take a 9-2 lead with 4:29 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeyes were behind 11-8 after the first ten minutes following a second-chance basket by
Kennedy Cambridge as the quarter concluded.
The Ducks commenced the second quarter with two free throws, quickly answered by the Buckeyes. After being behind 15-10, Ohio State orchestrated a 12-0 run over two minutes, ascending to a 22-15 lead with 6:39 before halftime, prompting an Oregon timeout. Ohio State extended their run to 27-0, increasing their lead to 37-15 with 2:37 left in the second quarter. The Ducks managed to string together a 7-0 run, but Thierry ended the half with two free throws, sending Ohio State into halftime ahead 39-22.
The third quarter saw a competitive back-and-forth, where neither team scored more than seven points consecutively. J. Cambridge initiated the scoring for the quarter, netting the first six points for the Buckeyes. Ohio State secured six of the final eight points in the quarter, leading 60-43 after 30 minutes of action.
Petty began the fourth with a layup, pushing herself into double figures. Oregon responded with a 9-0 run, narrowing the gap to 62-52 with six minutes to go. Both teams then entered a scoring drought for two minutes before Thierry ended it with a layup. The Ducks managed to close within eight on multiple occasions, but the game concluded with a score of 69-60.
