FORESTHILL, Calif. (KMAX/KOVR/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – Security footage recorded a hefty bear frolicking and splashing in a backyard pool, despite the bone-chilling weather conditions.
The bear strolled into Leslie Schmid’s yard in the early hours while she and her spouse were resting, and in spite of the icy temperatures, he dives right in.
“He gets in and out,” remarked Leslie. “He shakes himself off like a dog, which I found surprising. I didn’t realize they did that, and [he] jumps back in as if he owns the area.”
Leslie pointed out that her pool lacks a heater, indicating that the bear was swimming in extremely cold water. Peter Tira from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stated that it’s not particularly unusual to see bears active even when many are in hibernation.
“Not all bears hibernate,” Tira noted. He elaborated that hibernation usually takes place because bears struggle to find food in winter, yet these days many bears can scavenge food from the trash bins of nearby residences, rendering hibernation unnecessary.
“It’s a very slippery slope because once they become accustomed to associating humans and our neighborhoods with food, they grow increasingly bold in their attempts to obtain that food,” Tira explained.
However, Schmid was not upset about the incident and remarked, “it’s actually kinda cool.”
