IRVINE, Calif. – The Cougar swimming and diving squad returned to the pool to gear up for the final stretch of their season, participating in the Orange County Triple Distance Invitational on Saturday in Irvine.

At this event, competitors swam their designated strokes over three varying distances. Freestyle swimmers could choose between sprint (50, 100, 200 yards) or endurance (200, 500, 1000 yards). Other stroke competitors swam at the same sprint distances, while medley swimmers tackled 100, 200, and 400 yards.

The Cougars made a significant impact on the leaderboards in individual events. Ashley Cochran secured victory in the 200 butterfly, marking the day’s first event with a time of 2:12.74. Alongside her, three additional Cougars placed in the top five of that event. Mikaela Maemura (2:09.36) dominated the 200 backstroke, as did Montana White in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.62), enabling the Cougars to accumulate a substantial team lead after the first six events of the day. Maemura would excel in the backstroke events, finishing first in both the 50- and 100-yard distances, while Marci Yanagawa took second behind Maemura in both the 100 and 200, and placed third in the 50.

Not to be overshadowed, Sydnee Wilson had a stellar performance in the freestyle sprints, clinching victories in the 50- and 100-yard events, while earning a third-place finish behind White in the 200. Allison Ferrer and Madison Schneider participated as the sole contenders in the diving events, with Ferrer scoring an impressive 412.75 points in the 1m springboard competition. Overall, Azusa Pacific led among the four teams participating, finishing with 288 points compared to Concordia’s second-place total of 244.

The Cougars have one more meet planned before the conference championships, as they are expected to travel across town to Malibu on January 25th for a dual meet against Pepperdine. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
