“Behind the Lens: James Pearson-Howes Captures Models in Heartfelt Family Moments”

In 2018, the photographer James Pearson-Howes was preparing to conduct a model test, and, as was typical, the model arrived on set. However, what was atypical about her arrival was the presence of her father and sister, an occurrence James had never encountered before. “It struck me how uncommon it is to witness a family supporting the model,” he remarks, “and that left a profound impact on me.” Indeed, while we are accustomed to observing models in front of the lens, we seldom receive glimpses into their lives beyond the glamorous shoots. Who are the individuals that shape the model into the person they become? The ones who have known them since birth, or, those who have established their tight-knit support system.

At first, James intended to develop a collection titled Good Genes – featuring models in their residences with their families, all donned in denim. While that remains a project James is eager to pursue, the concept evolved amidst the Covid pandemic, as familial interactions became increasingly scarce, heightening their importance. Furthermore, through numerous “thought-provoking” discussions with models and their families, the emphasis gradually shifted from fashion to the significance of family ties. The project soon adopted a new title, Model Family – a term with dual implications, referencing the models involved and, somewhat ironically, contemplating the existence of a ‘model family’. In addition to portraits, James also produced home-video-style short films capturing b-shots, to convey “subtle, micro movements – how one person positions themselves next to another or the nuances of their touch.” James adds: “These small, uncomplicated actions can convey so much about their bond.”
