In October, the company published its yearly report identifying the “safest” countries. To uncover which nations topped the list, the team utilized its annual survey, which it has been employing to gather information since 2016, from American travelers to gauge their “attitudes towards travel safety.” In the survey, the team inquiries where travelers have visited in the previous five years and requests them to evaluate those locations on their perceived safety. It then incorporates additional data into those evaluations, including insights from the Global Peace Index and Numbeo, along with an average of the GeoSure Global scores of the primary cities in each country. Ultimately, it assigned each destination a total weighted score for its ranking.

Upon analyzing the data, it determined Japan as the No. 1 safest destination in Asia — and the ninth safest country globally.

“The country defies the notion that only sparsely populated nations can be safe,” the team remarked. “The nation ranks in the top 50 for population density and boasts the world’s 12th-lowest homicide rate.” 

Based on the findings, Japan has advanced in the rankings, rising from its 12th-place position in the 2024 list. “If anything, Japan has grown safer over the past few years. An increasing number of people speak English, so they can assist you if you become lost or need help with navigation,” it noted.

The only aspect to be cautious about, according to the team, is if you plan to carry your medical marijuana. The team noted, “According to the State Department, the Japanese government does not make a distinction between medical and recreational marijuana. Possessing either can lead to severe prison sentences and fines.” But apart from that, you are sure to have a wonderful time. 

Additional countries that joined Japan on the list include Iceland at the top position, followed by Australia, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Germany, and Norway, with Denmark following Japan and completing the top 10.
