When Travis Perry set foot on the campus of the University of Kentucky, he was already renowned throughout the Commonwealth. Perry earned the title of 2024 Kentucky Mr. Basketball after concluding his tenure at Lyon County High School, where he guided his team to the Sweet 16 championship as a senior.
Perry was recognized as a prolific scorer at Lyon County. He became the inaugural player in Kentucky high school history to amass over 5,000 points throughout his career. Nevertheless, during his first year, it has been his performance as a point guard that has allowed Perry to see playing time.
Stepping in for the injured Kerr Kriisa, Perry has evolved into his position as the secondary point guard to Lamont Butler.
“I certainly feel that I’m becoming more at ease in my position,” Perry remarked. “Transitioning into a new environment is always somewhat challenging, regardless of the location. But I believe I’ve made significant progress and have truly discovered what I need to accomplish during the minutes I am on the court.”
Perry, who has successfully made a three-pointer in three of the previous four UK games, is among several sharpshooters on the Kentucky roster. The Cats nailed 16 three-pointers during their road victory against Mississippi State on Saturday evening. While proficient shooting can certainly propel a team, Perry and the Cats understand that discovering alternative pathways to achieve the ultimate goal is equally crucial.
“I believe we have an excellent shooting squad, possibly one of the finest in the nation. If we’re sinking shots and feeling it, we can take down any team in the country,” Perry expressed. “However, we also aim to reach a stage where we can secure victories even when our shots aren’t falling. Good teams can indeed prevail when they’re hitting their shots, but I think exceptional teams and championship-level teams can triumph even when they’re struggling with their shooting.”
The Southeastern Conference challenge continues on Tuesday evening as the eighth-ranked Cats host No. 11 Texas A&M at Rupp Arena. The Aggies currently stand at 13-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. On Saturday, A&M suffered a defeat to Alabama 94-88 while missing their top scorer Wade Taylor IV. Perry is aware that the Aggies excel in rebounding.
“They’re a very formidable opponent. Their offensive rebounding is particularly noteworthy,” Perry commented. “They rank first in the nation in offensive rebound percentage by a considerable margin. We need to establish control early, make an aggressive start, and maintain that energy throughout the game.”
Tuesday’s matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
