Michiana Counties Issue Travel Warnings Amid Treacherous Road Conditions

(WNDU) – Numerous counties within our viewing area are currently under a travel advisory due to several incidents resulting from light snowfall and reduced visibility in Michiana.

As of 2:45 p.m. EST, three out of nine northern Indiana counties in our viewing region are under a travel advisory. They include the following:

YELLOW: Elkhart, St. Joseph, Starke

In Indiana, information regarding county travel statuses is supplied by each county’s emergency management agency. As counties declare official travel alerts and inform the state, the updates will be reflected automatically at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s website.

Counties marked YELLOW are under an ADVISORY, which represents the lowest tier of local travel advisory. This indicates that routine travel or activities may be limited in certain areas due to a hazardous condition, and you should exercise caution or steer clear of those locations.

Counties classified as ORANGE are under a WATCH, signifying that conditions pose a threat to public safety. Only essential travel, such as commuting to work or responding to emergencies, is advised. This is also when businesses, schools, governmental entities, and other organizations should activate their emergency action plans.

Counties listed as RED are under a WARNING, the highest level of local travel advisory. This means that travel may be limited to emergency management personnel only. Under this advisory, you are encouraged to:

• Restrict all travel
• Follow necessary emergency protocols
• Assist public officials and disaster response teams in carrying out emergency operation plans
• Adhere to and comply with lawful instructions from properly identified authorities.
