According to two individuals acquainted with the situation, Microsoft is conducting layoffs across divisions including security, experiences and devices, sales, and gaming.

A representative from Microsoft mentioned that the layoffs are minor but did not disclose a specific number; they are also unrelated to the job cuts Business Insider previously reported as targeting underperforming staff throughout the company.

One of the individuals familiar with the details disclosed that employees began receiving notifications on Tuesday regarding layoffs in Microsoft’s security division. This group is overseen by Charlie Bell, a former leading cloud executive at Amazon, who surprised the industry when he transitioned to Microsoft in 2021 to spearhead a restructured cybersecurity initiative.

Last year, Microsoft amplified its Secure Future Initiative, positioning security as the primary concern for every employee. This adjustment came after several years of security challenges at Microsoft, including what the Department of Homeland Security termed “a chain of security failures” that permitted Chinese hackers to infiltrate emails of thousands of clients.

The organization also prioritized security as a fundamental aspect during employee performance assessments.

“When faced with a choice between security and another priority, the answer is unequivocal: Prioritize security.” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella declared in an email to Microsoft staff last year.
