LUBBOCK – The Texas A&M track & field squad is hitting the road for the initial time this year as it heads to the Sports Performance Center at Texas Tech for the Corky Classic from Jan. 17 to Jan. 18. Events on the opening day commence at 3 p.m., whereas events on the subsequent day kick off at 11 a.m.
The Aggies make their way to Lubbock following an impressive performance at home during the McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational, where they established a new school record, clinched 12 event victories, achieved 16 personal bests, and registered nine top-12 performances in team history.
Auhmad Robinson attracted national recognition as he clocked an impressive time of 32.34 in the 300m that shattered the A&M school record. That timing also positions Robinson as the No. 3 all-time collegiate performer in this event. Robinson’s record-setting display earned a mention from the USTFCCCA, as the organization honored him as Men’s National Athlete of the Week, and the conference office also recognized him as SEC Men’s Runner of the Week.
A&M secured 12 event wins at the McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational, featuring Aleksandr Solovev capturing the men’s pole vault title in his collegiate debut. Additional event champions included
Cooper Cawthra (1,000m),
John Baker (long jump),
Gavin Champ (triple jump),
Megan Roberts (3,000m),
Zack Munger (3,000m),
Carter Bajoit (high jump), Robinson (300m),
Kennedy Wade (400m),
Antonie Nortje (400m),
Maddie Jones (800m) and the men’s 4x400m relay team comprising
DeMarco Escobar,
Cutler Zamzow, Robinson, and
Kimar Farquharson.
The record books were revised following the home opener, with nine athletes breaking into the top-12 ranks in A&M history. The men’s 1,000m was highlighted as Cawthra,
Caden Norris, and
Gilbert Rono now occupy the second, third, and fourth places, respectively, in the all-time event rankings.
As they enter the second week of the season, the Maroon and White boast several athletes currently leading the nation in their particular events. On the men’s front, Nortje and Farquharson are in first and second place, respectively, in the 400m standings; the 4x400m relay features the fastest times in the nation; Solovev also leads the nation’s pole vault standings; Baker is ranked third in the country for long jump; and Champ holds second place nationally in the triple jump rankings. On the women’s side,
Kennedy Wade is presently third in the 400m, and the 4x400m relay ranks third as well.
