East Lansing, Mich. — Michigan State sophomore Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) is among the 35 Division I netminders on the 2025 Richter Award Watch List. The Richter Award is given annually to the premier goaltender in Division I men’s ice hockey.
For the second straight season, Augustine holds the title of the youngest full-time starting goaltender in Division I hockey. No goaltenders younger than Augustine have participated in more than eight matches this season. Born in February 2005, he was selected in the second round (41st overall) by the Detroit Red Wings during the 2023 draft.
A standout on both collegiate and international levels, Augustine appears on the Watch List for this accolade for the second consecutive year. He leads the Big Ten, ranking sixth nationally with 11 wins, second in save percentage (.931, T-11th NCAA), second in shutouts (2, T-8th NCAA), and third in GAA (1.97, 14th NCAA). He is also second in the conference for games played (15) and minutes played (912:18). His 11 wins this season include a 4-1-1 record against top 15 teams, while Michigan State boasts an impressive overall record of 18-2-2 and currently occupies the top position in both national rankings.
Augustine missed four games in December and January to join Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships, where he helped guide the team to a second gold medal in a row. He achieved a .917 save percentage and a 2.52 goals against average during this year’s tournament, participating in five out of Team USA’s seven matches. Augustine is one of only 19 goaltenders in history to have played for three WJC teams in his career, setting an IIHF record for netminders. He also became Team USA’s winningest goaltender at this event with his 11th and 12th victories, surpassing Jack Campbell’s previous record of 10 (2010-12).
Augustine has earned medals in five youth international competitions. Together with current Spartan teammate Isaac Howard, he secured a gold medal at the World Juniors in 2024; he also garnered a bronze in 2023, when he played alongside Red Savage and Charlie Stramel. Augustine also achieved a silver (2022) and a gold (2023) at the U18 World Championships. Last spring, he was selected for his first men’s Team USA senior World Championship roster, participating in four matches with a team primarily composed of NHL players.
A committee comprising coaches, administrators, scouts, and media personnel will narrow down the list to around a dozen finalists by early January, after which a winner will be selected from three finalists announced at the NCAA Frozen Four in April.
