Diving Deep: Highlights from This Week in ACC Swimming & Diving

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference dives into action over three days this Thursday through Saturday, January 16-18.
 
The Golden Bears are hosting the Cal Diving Invitational from Thursday to Saturday. Nine teams will arrive in Berkeley, California, among them ACC competitor Stanford. Cal will also host USC on Friday before welcoming UCLA in a women’s-exclusive swimming event on Saturday. Stanford women’s swimming will compete against UCLA on Friday prior to the Cardinal men’s and women’s squads taking on USC on Saturday.
 
North Carolina will make its way to Raleigh, North Carolina, to face in-state and ACC opponent NC State. In their previous outing at the UGA Diving Invite on January 4-5, the Wolfpack divers secured fifth place on the women’s side and seventh on the men’s. Last weekend, the Tar Heels achieved a sweep against Duke with a score of 211-81.5 for the men and 178-114 for the women.
 
Miami kicked off the spring season with a 199-95 home triumph over Iowa. The Hurricanes are set to host Houston at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday for a Senior Day meet.
 
Duke will head to Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday for a two-day ACC encounter against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets split a tri-meet with Auburn and Carson-Newman on Tuesday, January 7. Georgia Tech triumphed over Carson-Newman but was defeated by Auburn in both the men’s and women’s categories.
 
Boston College faces their crosstown rivals Boston University this weekend. On Friday, the Eagles will visit Boston University to take part in a 3-meter diving-only competition. The following day, they will host Boston University for a swimming and 1-meter diving event.
 
Virginia Tech will venture to State College, Pennsylvania, to compete against Penn State and Princeton in a tri-meet. Last weekend in the pool, the No. 19 Hokies men’s team defeated No. 17 Virginia while setting eight of Virginia’s pool records. The Hokies women, however, were unable to overcome the Cavaliers in their head-to-head matchup.

• The ACC featured eight teams in the latest CSCAA Division I Women’s Top 25 Poll, led by Virginia at No. 1 and Stanford at No. 3. Louisville, NC State and Cal completed the top 10 at No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. North Carolina secured No. 17, Duke was at No. 20 and Florida State held the No. 25 spot.
• The ACC had 10 teams represented in the most recent CSCAA Division I Men’s Top 25 Poll, led by California at No. 5, NC State at No. 6, Stanford at No. 8, and Louisville at No. 10. North Carolina ranked No. 12, Virginia at No. 17, Virginia Tech at No. 19, Georgia Tech at No. 21, Florida State at No. 22, and SMU at No. 25.
• At the 2024 World Aquatics 25m Championships, Virginia captured 10 World Championship titles and established 11 Individual World Records, three Relay World Records and 18 American Records.
  • Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh set nine Individual World Records, along with two Relay World Records, and 12 American Records on her own.

• ACC men are leading the nation in the following events:

• The 2024-25 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships will occur from February 18-22 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
• Boston College commenced the 2024 season under the new guidance of head swimming and diving coach Dara Torres. Torres is a five-time Olympian, six-time World Record holder, and a four-time gold medalist.
• Dario di Fazio was appointed the head diving coach for Miami ahead of the 2024 season. Di Fazio has served as the assistant diving coach at Miami for the past 28 years.
• Stanford women’s swimming and diving boasts the distinction of being the only program nationwide to consistently finish in the top 10 in every NCAA Championship since the 1975-76 season.
• During the 2024 Paris Olympics, ACC swimming and diving student-athletes secured 18 gold medals, 22 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals for Team USA. NC State’s David Betlehem won a bronze medal representing Hungary.
