IBM Unveils Innovative User Solutions for the Emergency Services Network

The Emergency Services Network (ESN) is an essential communication system being established by the UK government. It will facilitate rapid, safe, and secure voice, video, and data communication across EE’s network, granting first responders immediate access to life-saving information and data in real-time scenarios.

What does this announcement signify?

IBM, alongside a network of partners, has been awarded the contract to provide User Services for the Emergency Services Mobile Communications Programme under the Home Office. We will be at the core of ESN, offering three primary functions: provision of a secure mission-critical application, complemented by systems integration across IT and telecom infrastructures, as well as Service Integration. These services will be offered throughout the deployment and implementation of ESN, including when services become operational.

Who will gain from utilizing the ESN?

ESN will serve over 300,000 frontline emergency service personnel, including fire and rescue, police, ambulance services, local governmental bodies, utility providers, and other first responders. Additionally, the introduction of ESN is anticipated to yield considerable cost savings through communication and device unification for User Organisations, delivering long-term value to taxpayers.

ESN will enhance emergency service operations by providing a contemporary voice and data platform that allows emergency services to exchange crucial data, information, and knowledge swiftly and securely. Collaborating with ESN’s Mobile Services Partner, User Services will additionally prioritize communication between emergency services over other network traffic.

ESN will ensure secure and dependable mission-critical communications, delivering a modern voice and data platform that fosters closer collaboration among emergency services for data sharing during emergencies.

What is the duration of the contract?

The ESN initiative will see IBM and its ecosystem partners implementing the network and IT infrastructure for the new contract over a span of 7 years, with the possibility of a two-year extension.

Who are the ecosystem partners collaborating with IBM?

IBM will spearhead this initiative with the following partners: Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, Frequentis, Exponential-e, and Palo Alto Networks.
