Species such as grizzly bears and Arctic ground squirrels have adapted the capability to hibernate as a means of surviving the harsh winter months. During hibernation, their core body temperatures decrease, and their heart rates and metabolic functions slow down to preserve energy. They also take in less oxygen during this dormant phase.

But what if you could induce hibernation in non-hibernating creatures—including humans? How might you manage hibernation as a treatment to assist individuals recovering from strokes or heart attacks, or apply it to astronauts to help them withstand a lengthy journey to Mars? Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have taken an initial step towards exploring these inquiries by simulating a hibernation state in rats, which typically do not hibernate. Joining us to delve into this research is Domenico Tupone, a research assistant professor of neurology at OHSU.
