Rory McIlroy mentions that he has been “focused on enjoying himself” during his two-month hiatus.

The World Number Three is set to tee off for the inaugural time in 2025 at this week’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic, where he aims for a third consecutive title.

However, when queried about what steps he has taken to enhance his performance during the off-season, the Northern Irish player offered an unexpected response.

“I’ve been focused on having fun,” he stated. “Took a couple of trips during my break. Attended a Borussia Dortmund match on Friday night.

“Just engaging in activities that I’ve always wished to do. You know, visited New Zealand for a few days, which was incredibly enjoyable and something I’ve wanted to experience for a long time.

“Honestly just trying to savor the moments. It’s the only period of the year I feel like I can genuinely relax and do that.

“There’s ample time from now until April to buckle down and refine my game, and I simply wanted to make the most of my break.”

When asked if the possibility of becoming only the fifth player to triumph at the same DP World Tour event, excluding WGCs, for three consecutive years and joining Ian Woosnam (1990-92 at the Monte Carlo Open), Sir Nick Faldo (1991-93 at the Irish Open), Colin Montgomerie (1998-2000 at the BMW PGA Championship), and Ernie Els (2002-04 at the Heineken Classic) was on his mind this week, McIlroy disclosed that making history was an advantageous consideration rather than his primary aim.

He said: “It’s always been nice to commence my year in Dubai. It’s something that I’ve undertaken for most of my professional career.

“The past couple of years coming here to Dubai, starting the season, having success, obviously it’s really nice to kick off with a strong beginning. That’s the objective again this year.

“I believe I mentioned this at the end of last year, and winning the Seve Ballesteros Award, I think being able to place my name among the European golfing legends, Seve (Ballesteros), Faldo, (Bernhard) Langer, (Ian Woosnam) Woosie, (Sandy) Lyle, and all these individuals, it’s remarkable.

“My ambition is to go out and extract the best from myself and play as well as I can, and thankfully that has led to winning a few tournaments here and there.

“However, my mindset has never been, ‘Oh, if I achieve this, I’ll equal him, or if I accomplish that’. I want to win tournaments, and it’s truly delightful on Sunday evenings to relax with a glass of wine and reflect on all the names on the trophy and realize that my name is among them. That’s truly special.

“It’s gratifying to buckle down. I sense that my game is in solid shape. I’ve come close to achieving some exceptional feats in golf over the last few years. I’ve accomplished some impressive things.

“But I recognize that the window is gradually closing, and I want to ensure I do everything possible to have the best career I can.”

McIlroy anticipates having to navigate a more demanding course setup at Emirates Golf Club this week if he wishes to secure a third straight title.

“I appreciate the thick rough,” he remarked. “I enjoy the configuration of the golf course.

“The greens are considerably firmer today compared to Monday. So as the week progresses, I believe it’s going to provide an excellent golfing challenge, which I think we all are eager to experience and I believe that’s what you all want to watch.”
