NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, members of the Crew 9 mission, will stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) longer than anticipated, as the launch of SpaceX Crew 10 has been postponed until late March 2025. Initially planned for February 2025, the delay of Crew 10 subsequently extends the duration of Crew 9 astronauts’ stay until their successors arrive. Williams and Wilmore have been in space since June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.

Reason for NASA’s Crew 10 launch postponement

NASA decided to postpone Crew 10 to provide more preparation time for the new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The choice emphasizes safety and mission effectiveness, as the upgraded spacecraft presents superior capabilities. NASA indicated that waiting for a fully prepared Dragon capsule guarantees the mission meets stringent safety and operational criteria.

Initially, Crew 9’s mission used Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. However, due to technical complications, NASA transitioned to SpaceX’s Dragon, which influenced the mission schedule. Crew 10 will utilize a new Dragon spacecraft, necessitating extra preparation time. NASA concluded this new capsule was best suited to fulfill mission requirements, with safety and operational effectiveness being top priorities.

Crew 10 comprises NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. Their launch delay directly impacts the return of Williams and Wilmore, as they must remain on the ISS until their replacements arrive. NASA favors overlapping crew scheduling to ensure uninterrupted operations on the station and to avoid disturbances to research and maintenance.

Despite the prolonged stay, Williams and Wilmore persist with their responsibilities on the ISS, engaging in spacewalks and station upkeep. Williams expressed, “Meanwhile, Williams noted that she still wished to return home but emphasized the considerable amount of work that must be accomplished while in space.” Crew 9 continues to concentrate on their assignments while anticipating Crew 10’s arrival and their eventual return to Earth.
