Winter Wonderland Woes: City Issues Urgent Travel Advisory Amid Ongoing Snowfall

In light of deteriorating roadway conditions, the Dunkirk Police Department, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, DPW, and DFD, is issuing a travel advisory until further notice.

Travel that is not essential is highly discouraged.

Approximately 10 inches of snow has accumulated in certain regions since this morning.

Dangerous conditions include:

— Robust winds and heavy, swirling snow may lead to drifting, fallen trees, and electrical lines.

— Fallen power lines: Always regard any downed line as live and electrified. Keep a safe distance of no less than 35 feet.

— Traffic signals: If traffic lights lose power, treat intersections as a four-way stop.

Keeping vehicles off the road will assist in snow clearing and ensure that emergency vehicles can navigate the streets safely.

Residents are urged to adhere to alternate parking rules to aid in snow clearance and allow easier access for emergency responders. We request that residents comply with alternate parking by relocating vehicles by 5 p.m. to the alternate side. Failure to move vehicles could lead to hazardous traffic situations. Following the parking guidelines will facilitate snow clearing and emergency vehicle access to the streets. If a vehicle obstructs snow removal or presents a traffic issue for emergency services, it may be subject to towing.
