An Insider’s Secret: Former American Airlines CEO Shares His Ultimate Travel Hack

Even experienced airline personnel face their own flying challenges — including the prior CEO of American Airlines.

Doug Parker held the position of CEO from 2001 to 2023, during which he acquired a crucial insight for travelers seeking smoother journeys.

“There are no miracle solutions,” Parker stated in the Airlines Confidential podcast, but “I can share what I advise my family.”

The primary guideline that Parker and his family adhere to whenever they fly: “Avoid checking a bag.”

“No matter our destination, you can purchase items when you reach there,” he clarified. “It’s not that the airlines lack the ability to deliver your luggage, but it’s extraordinarily complicated, making your experience significantly more challenging.”

“That’s my key advice to anyone — just find a method, regardless of your destination, to fit everything into your carry-ons and avoid checking a bag.”

Given the frequency with which luggage is lost or damaged, this guidance is practical — and not all airlines handle lost luggage similarly.

A report from 2024 revealed that American Airlines mislaid more bags than any other carrier. Other airlines are beginning to adopt Apple AirTags and will soon accept Find My item locations as part of their customer service strategies for tracking misplaced or delayed luggage.

Although packing solely a carry-on for extended trips might seem overwhelming, mastering the art of light packing can alleviate the hassle of managing luggage upon arrival, though it may be difficult to avoid if you don’t board promptly.

Parker also indicated that airline staff are more likely to provide better care if travelers treat them with kindness and respect.

“A more beneficial tip is simply to be nice to the individuals working out there. It’s not just common advice. While it can be tough for travelers, it complicates matters for the personnel as well,” he suggested.
